How I Created My Dream Room With $40

Creating dreams is all about hard work!

The best way I've heard my room described was when a close friend of mine name Jared commented on it. Of course, this was about a year ago when there wasn't nearly as much time and effort spent on it. I often think about if any of you wonder how I did all this and where it all came from.

Well, whether you wonder or not, I guess I'm about to tell you. This is kind of a long story, and I am not going to give too many specifics, but at the very least I want to let you guys know the significance of having a room like this to someone like me.

When I was a kid, I lived in a home that didn't have a whole lot of love. I could honestly say from the ages of 12-17, I was never there consistently for more than 2 weeks at a time. In spite of this, I was sort of a pack rat. I had folders that I kept with me in an Inuyasha Messenger bag, about three thick folders, filled to the brim with my drawings, random bits of paper and messages I had save over the years, and any kind of album art I even got from a CD. Eventually, these folders graduated into a box, then two boxes, then even three as I traveled around. I remember before my graduation senior year I pulled out a crumbled and thrown in cap and gown out of a plastic bag, but my papers were always kept in mint condition and sorted in boxes. They meant the most to me.

When I got to be an adult, Pretty much at 18, I got my own apartment. I was so proud and so happy to finally have some space of my own! By this time the packing and lugging things around had grown old and the boxes of papers and random trinkets had grown to be a problem for anyone helping me pack it around. As soon as I got in the door I started taping things to the walls, and over the next few months it grew and grew.

It wasn't until I got online that I really became interested in making a set. I had seen Youtubers like Phillip Defranco and Syren Cove, and just really loved their toys and cool things all posted up in places in the background, and I wanted something just as cool! I knew just starting as a camgirl, I wouldn't be able to afford a new decoration set up, maybe even paint and posters and things, but I wanted my room to look just as cool.

That's when I thought about it, "I may not be able to really decorate my room like other people do, but I definitely have the resources to do it my way. In my lifetime I had made tiny couches for Guinea pigs out of old pants, cotton balls, glue, and toothpicks. So who's to say I couldn't make walls cheap too?

So, The first step was to find something big enough to cover the walls. I went from fast food place to fast food places getting huge cardboard boxes to break apart and make the foundation of the wall with. Then, I got a ton of magazines from people around me, as well as filled out surveys for free 2 year subscriptions to magazines like Cosmopolitan and Vogue. After measuring the walls I decided how much cardboard I'd need and began to cover those pieces in whole pages only, text and all. I needed a solid background. Next, I cut out medium sized pieces and stuck them in places that were mostly text, to cover it up leaving mostly color and visuals. The next step was then, picking out tiny pieces and covering up those pieces that still had text or anything that I didn't want in my collage.

After that, I got it all up on the wall and began the drawings. I drew Nergal JR from the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Krillin from DBZ, and Daria from her own show. All of these characters were super important because I relate to them in some way. Nergal because of his strong urge for revenge no matter the situation. Krillin because even though he stayed small he was still just as small as the others, and Daria because I view myself as very plain and cynical. I chose to keep all these characters in only black and white so that they would pop off the very colored background. I outlined them in sharpie quickly, actually painted Nergal, and stuck them up.

Next were the shelves and the cloud. The shelves were originally white, so I painted them in baby pink and stuck toys on them. I tried to pick mostly Nintendo and DC stuff to put up there. My collection of Harley Quinn figures I've worked on for 10 years is up there excluding my anime one who's riding an elephant on over to the side. Once I got all the toys I wanted around it, I hung up the cloud. It started out as a stuffed animal Hammock that I expanded to fit my big unicorn. I then made puff balls out of recycled gift bag paper and stuck them up under it and put the rest of my unicorns and ponies up with him.

The very last things I did in this sequence was the other toys hanging next to my bed and my sort of motivational poster, and my couch. I literally put up my unicorn and all the stuff around it just with double-sided tape and thumbtacks of different colors, along with the regular tape. The "Princess Sleeps Here" part was a dollar store sticker. The motivational poster is also just magazine clippings just pasted together.  And the couch was something a friend was getting rid of so I fashioned a makeshift cover out of sheets. Around my room, you will also see just various collections of toys and such. These I had also collected throughout the years whether friends gave them to me, I had found them at a secondhand shop or I just picked them up walking around somewhere. Some of my toys are older than me!

This just goes to show you, how no matter where you're at in your career, if you want to look professional, or maybe even wild like mine, it can be accomplished! It just takes a lot of time and effort! This whole thing together cost me a total of $40 in resources to put it together and it's entirely collapsible and portable. No matter what it is you'd like to have just keep at it and literally create your dreams. I always wanted just a space of my own I could get away from the rest of the world, that no one could take from me, and now I have a room I could only dream about! I love to hear stuff like this! I come from a very similar living situation, and finally just moved into my own apartment a few months ago. It's so great to be able to finally have a little space to be creative and comfortable.

I wish they would've put a pic of my room up or there was a way I could. It's very impressive. :/
