As sex workers, it's safe to say we've all had someone tell us that sex work is disempowering to women. Many of us have even had well-meaning men try to "save us" from the industry. Let me tell you why this is wrong. 

Before I started doing sex work, my life was a mess. During my freshman year of college, I was a full-time student, trying to juggle five classes with family responsibilities and a full-time minimum wage job. I was getting burnt out quickly. I just didn't have the time to study anymore. I was failing multiple classes and working myself half to death as a fast food cashier.  I hated working on someone else's schedule and following their orders. As for a social life? Forget about it. I was constantly miserable and exhausted. I was even put on academic probation for my bad grades.

I decided to dip my toes into the sex work world. I began taking Kik sexting sessions and custom video orders. I found that I could make triple the money I was making at my minimum wage job in less than half the time. Why keep slaving away at some crappy fast food job when I can make money from home and set my own hours? 

Of course, it only got better from there. The summer after my freshman year, I took the opportunity to move across the country and stay with a friend, just for fun. Affording the travel was no problem, and I didn't have to go job-hunting; my job follows me around. Now, my job fits my lifestyle and not the other way around. 

Once the summer ended, I came back to school to begin my sophomore year. With my flexible work schedule and the ability to make a lot of money in a little time, I'm proud to say that I aced the majority of my classes. I'm nowhere near academic probation anymore, and I've had plenty of time to pick back up on hobbies like writing, reading, and making art, not to mention having an awesome social life! 

The empowerment doesn't stop there. The wonderful thing about sex work is that everyone is someone's type. No matter what you're insecure about, from a small chest to big labia, there are plenty of men who will practically worship you for it! I've gotten rid of so many ridiculous insecurities, and I love every part of my body now! Additionally, the sex work community is absolutely amazing. I couldn't ask for a better, more supportive group of girls and guys. Sex workers really do stick together, and it's awesome knowing someone always has your back! 

Sex work has empowered me to live the life I want to live. I am proud to be a sex worker, and I am proud of the community that we've built together.
