I've been in adult work for a while now. I started taking custom videos and photo requests when I was 18 years old and started phone sex only a few months later. I've always been a sexual person, and always been very giving, sexually and emotionally, and once I'd started in online sex work, it was a perfect fit for me. I knew it immediately. But I was still trying so hard to keep a vanilla job, and make this my little secret. Only my boyfriend knew.
I was talking to him about wanting to put more time into filming: "but I'm always so tired, with my other job, and school..."
He looked at me like I was crazy. "Just quit the retail job, hun. You love what you do."
I knew he was right, of course, and the more I thought about it, the only reason I kept that retail job was to have a ready answer for how I paid the bills. I had to open up. I spent days rehearsing how I'd tell everyone using my cat as a prop. I love doing this, and knew that I'd immediately cut off or reduce contact with anyone who wasn't willing to accept it. It doesn't change what they'd like about me. I have no room in my life for sex-negative people, anyway.
My friends all acted like it was no surprise. I got a few "Oh, that makes sense" and a moderately dumbfounded "That explains why you own SO MANY SD cards". But overall, they were happy for me. My family was a different story. My mother now starts every phone call with an attempt to suggest a different career path, and if I decline, starts to berate me. My father just avoids the conversation. I'd had similar problems with my parents in the past, coming out as bi, so it wasn't a shock. Everyone knows that's a risk if you get into sex work.
If you have considered doing this, be prepared for the mean reactions, and own it. Anyone who doesn't support you in safely producing content doesn't deserve you.

Sex and sexuality are unfortunately (and unfoundedly) such polarizing topics. Some people will just never understand the work that women do in this industry, no mater how hard we try convincing. I've realized that some people in my own life will never be accepting of sex work and it's best to reserve my energy for things other than explaining myself!

When my family found out, it was a complete mess. They were sooo judgmental and disrespectful towards me. Finally I told them they don’t have to agree with what I do but I would no longer allow the disrespect or they don’t need to be in my life. Luckily it stopped.
