As a millennial, just like most of us, I live on social media.  Twitter, my personal favorite, is the hub of all things current, trendy, and relevant.  Most of us cam girls have to use social media for promoting our brands, but many don’t go past promotion and truly explore those thoughts that everyone thinks but rarely actually says.  Hearing your neighbors’ candid thoughts of you can be quite appalling.  With that being said, I’m sure many of you have noticed that #SexWork Twitter isn’t always orgasms and sunshine.  It doesn’t take long to realize that the consensus of the general public seems to be that sex workers have given up on their lives, themselves, and are taking the easy way out.  But from where I stand, working someone else’s 9-5 your entire life is taking the easy way out.

After attaining my Bachelor of Science in a tier one university, I never imagined that I would completely void any ideas I had of the corporate trap masquerading as the American dream.  You know the plot, land a “good job” in your degree field right after college, finding a nice house, marry, babies, debt, blah blah boring.  I was no different.  Immediately after graduation, I found a decent 9-5, got a nice little apartment with Bee, and was even up for promotion within the first few months.  The part that doesn’t show up on paper is how miserable we both were.  We worked long hours starting before the ass crack of Dawn could get some air with childish, petty adults, our bosses were inept, and since we worked opposite schedules, we only saw each other maybe a couple hours of the day.  We were starting to dread the days.  We found ourselves making all this money with no time to enjoy the fruits of our labor with one another. Even more disheartening was the idea that even if we continued to work our way up within the company, no matter how much money we made them or how high we got promoted, it would always be someone else’s business, and we were disposable.  All of a sudden that cute little corner office was looking a little more like a blazing pyre of puss where happiness went to die.  Something had to change.

Just before I landed my cushy 9-5, we met Kay and Mar of what was then known as the MarAndKayShow (now hotguy_mar and solokayshow on CB).  They told us about their experience camming:  how fun it is, the freedom it allows, and how much money you can make.  We were hooked.  You mean to tell me I can stay home or travel the world and have sex with my girlfriend… TO PAY THE BILLS?! We were instantly hooked, albeit still a little skeptical.  We were aware that in most cases, it takes time to build that type of freedom, but we had to try.  So we appeared as guests in their room to make our big webcam debut, and we LOVED IT!  We soon found ourselves planning out how we could work it into our then current work schedules to switch to camming full time.

Disclaimer:  The previous testimony is in no way meant to undermine the difficulties of being a webcam model or glamorize sex work.  Work is work, and like any other occupation, being a webcam model comes with a whole host of challenges for each individual model.  The difference between us and everyone else is that we all work hard, but camgirls play much harder.

Full of its ups and downs, as I’m sure many of you know, being webcam models, for us personally, has been an amazing journey.  Yes, there have been some moments where we were stressed about making ends meet, but there have also been single days that we make more than a week’s payout goal.  As entrepreneurs, it’s up to us to show the dedication and tenacity that it takes to stick it out and work smarter, and sometimes even harder.  Before becoming a webcam model, owning a business never even seemed to be a path that I saw myself pursuing.  Camming has made that the only logical option for me.

Perhaps because of the stigma imposed on sex workers from mainstream society, some girls also seem to share the opinion that camming is a “back up plan” for a lack of better options.  “What employer will hire me with this background?” they ask.  My response:  be your own damn boss.  Being a webcam model can become an extremely lucrative career in and of itself if you play it smart and stay focused.  There is a market for every type of individual in this industry, so the idea that you may one day “age out” of the business or don’t fit the stereotypical cam girl mold, trash it.  But even if you don’t see yourself being a webcam model your entire life, using your resources properly while you are can help you build capital, build a network, and gain experience for your dream business one day.  Following my passions and enjoying my life as a webcam model has been the most satisfying path to entrepreneurship imaginable.  And serendipitously enough, my studies in communication have still been a phenomenal aid in this endeavor.  Furthermore, being a webcam model does not mean that I’ve given up on life.  I’m taking my life by the balls and owning it like a girl boss does.
