It is essential to know some basic anatomy. If you are doing impact play, you want to be careful to understand how not to cause any internal organ damage, which can be common when hitting someone's back. Also, always have a safe word like "red" if you need to stop the play for any reason. I also recommend using a safeword that represents slowing down like "yellow" or "mercy" so the bottom can communicate that they don't want the impact play to get any more intense. It definitely helps to start slow and ease into more intense impact play with a warm-up.

Like all fetishes, there are most likely numerous reasons people are into impact play. Some people get off sexually on receiving and/or giving pain. Others may find it to be a cathartic way to process emotions through physical pain.
