Cheating in the Digital Age

Temptation is Everywhere!

MV Girl Britney Swallows sheds some light on why people cheat and how much easier it is to step out on your partner in a world where most of our personal interactions take place online.

Cheating doesn't necessarily mean that the cheater thinks their relationship is over. While that’s not to suggest that every cheater feels this way, the majority of those who commit adultery are happy in their lives and relationships and aren’t even looking for a breakup. Cheating most often occurs in the phase of "companionate love," when couples begin to settle down, have kids, and solidify the life they built together. While they are fulfilled in some areas, like being a provider, other areas may be lacking, such as romance. According to a university study, 56 percent of men who had affairs were happy with their partners, while 34 percent of women who cheated were also really content in their relationship.

In this digital age, infidelity is more prevalent than ever. With hookup apps like Tinder, OkCupid, Coffee Meets Bagel and hundreds of online dating sites, it has never been easier to cheat and get away with a fling. Modern technology ushers in a lot of changes and infidelity is subject to those changes like any other aspect of human interaction. Nowadays, there are several new ways for cheating spouses to manage affairs (although the old ones haven’t exactly gone out of fashion). Digital communication technologies create a constant temptation due to their potential for secrecy and their ubiquity. People can seek out new partners via dating apps. They can connect with old partners on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They can carry on flirtations with co-workers over email and Skype chats. Since covering up one's misconduct has become so easy, how can you know for sure that your partner is truly loyal? It's difficult.

Not too long ago, strangers had to strike up awkward flirty conversations in the real world. People had to initiate relationships in person. Online communication is much less inhibited, and this leads to people becoming intimate more quickly. Freed from the constraints of the physical world, they share information they otherwise may not feel comfortable sharing. It may be comforting to think that if your partner is going to cheat, it will be a one-night stand with a total stranger, but cheaters tend to stick closer to home. In fact, the most common place for an affair to blossom is at work, with family, friends and neighbors coming in as a close second. However, everything a person does online leaves a digital trail that can't be easily obscured.

When a partner is unfaithful, it is not the betrayed spouse’s fault, no matter how terrible the wife/husband or the relationship may be. When a person cheats, he or she is making a conscious choice to do so.

I'm sure it's easier to cheat with dating sites available but i'm sure having access to real people who can provide cam shows and custom videos and whatnot has prolly curbed a lot of people from cheating! it's much easier to have a stranger provide some no strings attached fantasy than to potentially uproot a relationship!

I'm glad you shared your opinion. For me at least, I don't consider watching porn or ordering customs as cheating. It's a fantasy much like the one in which a woman thinks or envisions another man/woman while making love to her partner.  IMO there's not much of a difference between envisioning someone else while doing the wild thang with your loved one and watching sexy adult films.

Interesting. I am your fan since 15 years ago

I think the majority of people just aren't meant to be monogamous. That being said, if you do cheat in a monogamous relationship, you're a horrible person.

Yes, it is much easier to cheat now and even encouraged by sites that profit from it.  While some are more tempted than others to cheat, avoiding places of temptation would help those who desire to remain faithful.

If you don't want to jump, stop hanging your feet over the cliff!
