“The Flowers of Evil” by Charles Baudelaire is a collection of decadent erotic poems. It was originally written in 1857 but with 6 poems banned from publication due to being “an insult to public decency.” Baudelaire died ten years later. It wasn’t until 1949 that this ban was lifted and the collection was legally allowed to be published and distributed in its entirety.“the things we loathed become the things we love” is just one line from one poem, but it is also more than that, it’s the truth. Perhaps I am an evil woman, a vampire, devilishly obscene, perhaps that’s exactly why you love me, even aggressively like the sharpest thorns on the most beautiful roses. My art, my poetry, my videos, my mind, my body, even love, you loving me, has all been defined as morally objectionable by the status quo. Isn’t it thrilling? The fetishization of our own depravity?
