You haven’t seen your friend Harlyn in more than a year. With the pandemic, she’s been taking it very carefully and social distancing even after most people stopped. But now she finally feels safe enough to hang out with you again. You’re excited. You’ve missed hanging out with her in person. Especially lately. You’re sure you aren’t imagining the way she’s been flirting with you in your texts and videocalls these last few months. You and she have been just friends for years, but if she wants to use this meetup tonight to take your friendship to the next level…well, you certainly won’t complain! You might even be hoping for it, just a little. Unfortunately, the evening doesn’t turn out at all like you expected. Dinner is awkward. She keeps looking at you strangely, like she’s upset about something, but you can’t imagine what. She agrees to head back to your place for a movie, but all your hopes are dashed the moment she’s in your living room. She doesn’t want to watch a movie. She doesn’t even want to sit next to you on the sofa. “You’ve gained a lot of weight since I last saw you,” she says. “I think maybe you need an intervention.” You can tell she’s trying to be as kind as possible, but it’s still the most humiliating conversation you’ve ever had. This clip is a little different from my usual weight humiliation clips. No laughing or outright bullying, and instead with a lot of “I’m so sorry, I’m not trying to be mean, but…” talk. Are the things I say more or less humiliating when it’s coming from someone who has the very best of intentions? Hmm. You tell me. ;)
