Frustrated by Hercules' prowess in slaying monsters and catching beasts, Hera and King Eurystheus conspired to design a labor both humiliating and impossible: cleaning up cowshit. King Augeas of Elis had the greatest herd in the country, over 1000 head, and he had never had the stables cleaned. Hercules diverted the flow of two major rivers to clean the stables in a day. Afterwards, the neglected queen thanked Hercules for his service.
