Sex Toy Safety!

Everything you need to know!

Sex toys are such a fun aspect of our masturbation, sex and work lives! Toys can add a little extra something to videos and cam shows; whether it be a dildo to suck or sit on, or a vibrator to make you squirt on camera. And not only do they feel amazing; fans love seeing toys in use!

Choosing a sex toy isn’t always as easy as deciding to buy one though. The sex toy market is huge and unregulated, meaning you’re likely to pick up a dangerous toy from your local sex store without knowing it’s unsafe. I’ve been reviewing sex toys for just over two years now and have put many different objects in and around my genitals, so I'm here to give you a guide to safe sex toys!

Materials

I get so sad when I see videos with models using toys made from unsafe materials in their videos! We all deserve the BEST for our genitals, and while it may be easy to say “well it’s just a toy…”, sex toy materials can actually have an impact on our health. The most common sex toys you see in stores are made from materials can cause genital burning, frequent yeast infections, headaches, cramps, and nausea.

  • Recommended Materials: 100% pure silicone, medical grade stainless steel, wood (with medical grade finish), Aluminum, glass, natural stone, ceramic, and ABS-plastic.

  • Materials to Avoid: Jelly/Jellee/Gel, Rubber/“skin safe” rubber, Cyberskin, Vinyl and PVC, TPE, TPR, Elastomer, TPR-silicone, SEBS, “silicone blends”.

Some of the bad materials listed aren’t necessarily toxic but are porous, which means they can harbor mold and bacteria and are impossible to disinfect (even if you’ve washed it a bunch).

Toy Design

There’s a variety of toys for assholes, including butt plugs, anal beads, dildos, and vibrators. No matter what you decide to choose, get something that has a flared base twice the diameter of the insertable end. A flared base prevents toys from getting stuck inside you as the rectum has a habit of sucking things inside it (which results in uncomfortable doctors visits).

Sizing of insertable toys can be important too, especially if you’re not used to that type of penetration. Bigger dildos are always super fun ideas, but sometimes trying to sit on them can be an issue if they’re *too* big. Check out a toy’s dimensions (listed on toy store websites) to make sure you are comfortable handling them.

Where to Buy

Purchasing from Amazon always seems like the best way to go, because fans can purchase off your wish lists, there’s fast shipping and you can order toys amongst your everyday items too. But what most people won’t tell you is that there’s a lot of counterfeit activity happening through Amazon. Even if you’re buying a high-end good quality sex toy from there, there could be a chance you’re getting a fake made out of dangerous materials. Don’t waste your money and look to sex toy bloggers for their recommended stores, who will take your customer service needs seriously, support the work that you do, and won’t sell you a fake product. Plus independent businesses have wishlist options available too!

Cleaning & Storage

There’s a popular sex toy myth that cautions against storing your toys together, which isn’t true in most cases. If you have any of the toy materials listed in my recommended materials list, then you will have no issue with allowing your toys to touch in storage. However, if you do have toys with materials from the materials to avoid list, they will most likely fuse together and melt over time.

For cleaning, you don’t need any special toy cleaner (that's all chemicals anyway). You can use mild soap and warm water to wash toys before and/or after use, or you can even pop your non-electronic silicone toys into the dishwasher (without any dishes) to clean.

I know cheaper sex toys made from not-so-great materials can be appealing, but, trust me, investing in a quality sex toy is worth it, especially because you’ll be able to use it the rest of your life! Luckily there are some great affordable body safe sex toys out there too, and hopefully, I’ll be back soon with a list for you all!

Ich hab für eine exfreundin einen naturgetreue nachgemachten vibrator gemacht. Clone a willy

Some Natural Stones leak things like iron, so if its not fish tank safe its not body safe (silly but true). I would avoid stones like amethyst for this reason. Clear quartz would be a safer alternative.

Yass!! No jellies, throw them out! I have a YouTube channel for toy reviews of medical grade silicone products (: PS check out Rio's toy reviews too 💙

One thing I did was build a toy charging station. It allows me to ensure everything is charged & a centralized location.  Also I added flip panels to say charged/uncharge & clean/dirty.

Oh God >_< thanks for letting me know; I'm such a mess about my toys. True story: I ignorantly got a jelly dildo for my first toy when I started camming and I didn't wash it after using it (covered in coconut oil) and put it back in my drawer. Next day I noticed it had a stain that matched the color of a pair of tights I had in the drawer. I learned my lesson after that. I'll def be throwing away my new jelly dildo adter a few months after learning this.

Gwen Adora Apr 2018

My first toy was a jelly dildo too, so I've been there!!

Just to add: regarding the safe but porous toys, it's recommended to toss them out after 6-12 months or if they start to change color. Also if you insist on getting your money's worth out of that jelly dildo, use a condom to decrease the chances of chemical burns or whatever else could happen to your orifice(s).

Storage wise, I definitely recommend getting some sex toy storage bags the next time you do a sex toy haul. Just make sure the bags can fit your toy. Also if it's battery-operated, take the batteries out when not in use! If you just keep them in, they'll corrode and ruin your toy and there goes your money...

I personally recommend PinkCherry and DearLady for your sex toy shopping. PinkCherry has a wish list feature and the ability to accumulate points to use towards future purchases. DearLady has a massive selection and you can narrow it down by color, brand, material, feature and measurements such as length and girth.

Happy sex toy shopping!

Porous toys can still be unsafe (because the held bacteria can lead to yeast infections, etc), so it's honestly best to avoid them.

The condom advice is really misleading as well, as latex condoms (the most common condom type) don't work against protecting your bits from the toxins. Polyurethane or nitrile condoms can work but must cover the entire toy. However, its best to just avoid these toys all together!

PinkCherry and MyDearLady are not reputable toy stores, although they are widely used. They're bad with returns, re-sell used toys and generally have bad customer service. Support a store like SheVibe or Peepshow Toys instead, who re-invest their money in the sex-education community as a whole, will give you top notch customer service and advocate for knowledge around sex toy safety.

thanks!

Oops... I didn't know about the condom stuff. Or that PinkCherry and DearLady would re-sell toys. Even though both say that they don't accept returns unless they're defective. Just curious

I personally haven't had any bad experiences with either site, but I'll definitely check out SheVibe and Peepshow Toys for sure.

I really didn't mean to mislead others... I just wanted to throw my two cents in... OTL

I know i'm late to this discussion, but SKYN is the best Polyurethane condom, and i've used those condoms on many toys without problems, and with lube too.

Such a good post. I am so addicted to buying sex toys (especially vibrators!), and am currently on the hunt for a new dildo. Finding one that's made with actually body safe materials and fits my needs is proving very difficult. I wish sex toy manufacturers cared as much about our bits and pieces as we do! :P

Do you do all your toy reviews on ManyVids? Cos that's such a cool idea. Do you have reviews elsewhere too? I'd love to follow your toy reviews to scout for some new ones. :D

Gwen Adora Apr 2018

Hey! Thanks for reading!! There are a lot of good manufacturers out there too, they're just harder to find if you're not looking for them (amongst the mass amounts of bad ones).

I have a lot of toy reviews on my blog redhotsuz . com! If you need help finding something specific, shoot me a message and I'd be happy to send you some recommendations!

I'm just beginning in this world and don't have a lot of toys yet (actually just 2), so I was needing this. Now I know which materials to avoid.
